Fight Static Electricity In Your Hair!

It’s that dreaded time of year for your hair – static! Why is this happening? Well in the winter the air is more dry allowing electrons to build a negative charge on your hair strands. Now they all want to repel each other – this is why we get those annoying flyaways!

There are some ways to try to combat this

 Moisture, Moisture, Moisture!

Let’s start with adding moisture back into your hair. Try using a more moisture rich shampoo and conditioner, such as Goldwell Dual Senses Rich Repair Cream Shampoo and Goldwell Dual Senses Rich Repair Anti-Breakage Conditioner. There are also a few wonderful moisturizing products that can help tame those pesky flyaways. KMS Tame Frizz Taming Creme, KMS Curl Up Perfection Lotion and KMS Silk Sheen Styling Creme to just name a few of our favourites. These products can help smooth down your unruly locks. But remember – not everyone’s hair is created equal. To find out what products would work best for you pop into the salon for your custom moisturizing hair regime.

Protect Your Hair from Heat

Use a heat protector. If using a blowdryer, flat iron, curling iron, wand, etc. to style your hair it is very important to apply a heat protector to your hair. We don’t want to further dry out our hair creating more static, right?!?! We recommend applying KMS Free Shape Hot Flex Creme to towel dry hair before you blowdry. You can also use a spray – KMS Free Shape 2 in 1 Styling + Finishing spray kills two birds with one stone! It’s a heat protector plus it provides a medium strength hold – also great to keep those flyaway hairs exactly where we want them. You simply spray this on dry hair before using your hot styling tool of choice. For quick static touch ups apply a light spray to your hair brush (or tangle teaser!) for some smoothing.

Since we’re on the topic of heat it is important to use an ionic blowdryer. Not only do they help tame static by reducing that electronic charge that builds up on your strands, they also will cut down on drying time. Who doesn’t need a few extra minutes to get ready?? We strongly recommend Hai Tourmaline 3300.  Please feel free to inquire how to take yours home.

Skip a Shampoo Day

Another static fighting move is not shampooing daily. Excessive shampooing during these dry winter months can dry out your hair – leaving it prone to static. For those of you who wouldn’t dare think of going more than one day without a wash here are a couple options to help feel more comfortable with the idea.

One is to try applying dry shampoo to your roots. It is a great refresher for day old hair! It absorbs oil and just gives your hair that little punch to get through to your next shampoo. Apply to roots while hair is dry right before styling for the day or apply the night before you would have shampooed to refresh roots before the oil starts to break through. Products we like are Goldwell Dual Senses Ultra Volume Dry Shampoo and KMS Hair Play Makeover Spray.

Another tip to try with day old hair is to throw it up in a quick braid or up style. Having your hair up and away will also keep those flyaway tucked in and out of sight. Also your hair won’t appear as oily when put up or in a slick braid! Also your friends will be impressed with your new hair creativity!
